Prevalence of periodontal diseases and associated risk-factors in elderly population in regions of Georgia
Abstract
Background: The proportion of older people increases worldwide and it is predicted to be continued further in near future. Increase of number of older population is also observed in Georgia. Among lots of diseases and disabilities that elderly people suffer from, poor oral health is one of the main public health issue. Unsatisfactory oral conditions has negative impact on general health and quality of life of older adults.
Aim: The aim of the study was to assess periodontal health status in elderly population living in all regions of Georgia.
Methods: The study was carried out based on WHO recommendations. Stratified - cluster probability sampling technique was conducted at national level. The total sample size was 843. Special questionnaire was used in order to identify risk-factors, also to assess general health of older adults and analyze correlations among periodontal health and general health. Participation in the study was voluntary. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22.0 was used for statistical analysis.
Results:Unhealthy periodontal status was observed in 61% of the total sample. Only 6.3% of participants were observed to have healthy periodontal status. Considering the prevalence of full edentulism, which was assessed to be 32.7% in total sample, prevalence of periodontal diseases may be considered to be terribly high. Statistically significant difference was observed due to gender: males were more likely to have unhealthy periodontal tissue, compared to females.
Conclurion: The study demonstrated poor periodontal health and inadequate oral hygiene to be an urgent problem in elderly population living in Georgia. Developing of oral health care services is crucial in order to maintain optimal oral health and oral health related healthy life longevity. Include in undergraduate curriculum of dentistry “geriatric dentistry” as mandatory subject, create special continuing educational program in the field of gerodontology, support creation of gerodontology association of Georgia is essential.
